Stories from the Past

Many stories have passed down and many newspaper clippings continue to circulate in the area. Of these some stick out a little more than others.

September 11, 1901 - The sad case of William Gossage who is now a resident of the House of Industry at Athens touches the heart. He was a strong and healthy man, and was employed by William Davis & Son, contractors on Government work at Cardinal. His duty was to keep the track cleared of earth for the steam shovel. One day the lid of the steam shovel opened by mistake before it reached the car, and it dumped all the contents, dirt and stones on top of Mr. Gossage, burying him beneath it. Several men went to work with shovels and dug him out, and it was found by a doctor that his hip was broken and his back injured. The Company took him home where he was five days, and then they sent him to the Montreal General Hospital where he was for five months. He then came to Caridinal and the company refused to care for him any longer. The Reeve and a police officer found him lying on a pile of lumber and obtained lodging for him at a hotel for the night. The next day he was told to get out then a kind woman gave him lodging for a week. Last week two police officers and a teamster went to the house and ordered him to get in the wagon and he was taken to Brockville and the next day he was brought to the House of Industry. It is reported that lawyers working on his damage suit were successful in obtaining $3,000.00 from the Davis Co. for him but after their fees were all paid only $200.00 is left. Mr. Gossage left the House of Industry in June 1903 without permission.

November 27, 1901 - A very sad death occurred at the House of Industry this week. A newcomer to the Home, Lucas Tyron, aged 47 years left the home Tuesday night, going towards the swamp. As the wind was drifting the snow, his tracks were soon filled in. A search party was organized, but they gave up at 2 am. Early the next morning he was found at the edge of Mud Lake, frozen to death.

November 20, 1912 - William Fox was killed at the House of Industry at the Athens on November 20. He and his wife were brought to the Home the day before from their home at Maitland. He was 92 and his wife 88 years. Early the next morning he managed to raise a window and in leaning out, he lost his balance and fell 17 feet to the ground, landing on his head. He died instantly. He fought at the Battle of the Windmill in 1837. His mind had wandered for some time.
